Discipline, Purpose, and Recovery: A Conversation with Noe

Discipline, Purpose, and Recovery: A Conversation with Noe

For many, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a sport. For Noe, it’s a way of life. As a coach, competitor, and lifelong student, he’s found a rhythm that balances training, teaching, recovery, and community.

What does your daily routine look like when you’re balancing coaching, training, and competing?

My daily routine is built around training mornings and nights, teaching and building classes during the day, and making time to study and read about recovery. I try to keep up to date with the best ways to look after my body. Finding time for my loved ones is just as important, it keeps me balanced.

The best way I’ve found to manage it all is through micro-routines. If I can dedicate specific amounts of energy to each area of my life, they connect and fuel one another. Training gives me energy for teaching, teaching gives me purpose, recovery restores me for the next session, and being with family and friends keeps everything in perspective.

How do you keep your mindset locked in during high-pressure moments like competitions?

For me, competition is just a place to show the work that’s already been done. The pressure disappears when I remind myself that the real battles are in the day-to-day. I focus on discipline during training, sticking to my routines, and having faith in the work I’ve put in. By the time I step onto the mats at competition, I know the preparation is there, I just need to let it flow.

What’s one recovery habit you swear by that most athletes overlook?

The number one recovery tool is sleep. Nothing else comes close. Building a strong sleep routine makes a huge difference to my performance, my focus, and even my mood. If you can get a nap between training sessions, that’s even better. And on top of sleep, I’d say staying consistent with mobility work. It doesn’t look as intense as lifting or sparring, but it’s the glue that holds everything together long term. CBD is also a key part in my routine, a non negotiable!

How has Jiu Jitsu shaped the way you approach challenges outside of sport?

I really believe you are the way you fight. On the mats, every fear and every strength gets exposed. If you’re open to it, Jiu Jitsu teaches you about yourself in ways that go beyond technique. That’s helped me outside of sport too,  seeing challenges as opportunities, not threats, and understanding that every roll, every obstacle, is a chance to grow.

In your eyes, what’s the real secret to staying consistent over years of training?

For me, it comes down to purpose. Jiu Jitsu isn’t just training, it’s a tool to transform lives. It gives me a way to do good for others and to show up as my best self (most of the time!). That’s what keeps me coming back day after day. When you’re connected to something bigger than yourself, consistency isn’t forced, it’s natural. I’d miss it too much if I didn’t show up.
